Environmental groups are outraged over Albania’s silence on a suspected toxic waste scandal. In November, 102 mysterious containers arrived at Durres port from a Turkish-flagged ship, only to be whisked away to a "secure location".
Authorities promised an investigation into "smuggling of prohibited goods" and "abuse of power", but months later, no answers have surfaced.
Originally, the shipment left Albania in July, labeled as carrying harmless industrial waste- "iron oxide". But a whistleblower's report, revealed by environmental groups BAN and Milieukontakt Albania, claims it actually contained hazardous steel mill pollution dust.
The outrage grows as activists slam the government's "complete silence" and demand answers. Was the toxic cargo ever tested? Were samples even collected? No one knows. Illegal hazardous waste trafficking is a serious crime, yet there’s no sign of accountability.
This shipment was rejected by Thailand, drifting for months through Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Turkey before being dumped back in Albania. Environmentalists point to Kurum steel mills in Elbasan as the likely source. Meanwhile, the global business of waste dumping thrives, raking in Euro 44-70 billion annually.
With rising pressure, will Albania finally break its silence, or will this toxic mystery remain buried?
