The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has raised serious concerns over Delhi's now-scrapped excise policy, highlighting financial losses and procedural lapses. The report claims that the Delhi government favored private liquor vendors, resulting in a whopping ₹900 crore revenue loss.
Among the major red flags, the CAG found that retail licenses were issued without proper verification, and discounts were offered in violation of policy norms. Additionally, wholesalers allegedly received undue benefits, sparking speculation about preferential treatment.
The Delhi government had introduced the new policy in 2021, aiming to boost revenue and regulate the liquor business, but the policy was scrapped following multiple corruption allegations. With the opposition demanding answers and legal action, this report has added fuel to the fire in an already heated political debate.
Will there be further investigations? And who will be held accountable for these shocking lapses?
