Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to a wet morning on Tuesday as light showers swept across the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the rainfall to a fresh western disturbance, which is expected to persist throughout the day. The showers have brought temporary relief from air pollution, although the overall air quality remains poor.
The IMD has forecast that the rain will subside by Wednesday, February 5, but not before some isolated areas experience thunderstorms. However, as the rainfall eases, fog levels in the city are expected to rise.
Despite the showers, pollution levels continue to be a concern. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 265 in Chandni Chowk, 232 at ITO, and 132 at Lodhi Road, with Gurugram recording a concerning 302 in the 'Very Poor' category. Last week, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had imposed strict Stage 3 pollution control measures after AQI levels crossed 350.
Temperatures also saw a shift, with Delhi recording a minimum of 12°C—above the normal range for February. The IMD has predicted a brief rise in minimum temperatures across northwest India before a gradual dip of 2-3°C over the next few days. Another western disturbance is expected to impact the region from February 8, bringing further temperature variations.
With dynamic weather conditions in play, Delhi residents should brace for fluctuating temperatures, periodic showers, and rising fog levels in the days ahead.
