On September 8, 2024, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in India's Lok Sabha, commenced a three-day visit to the United States, marking his first international trip since assuming his new role following the 2024 general elections. The visit aims to strengthen India-U.S. relations and engage with the Indian diaspora, business leaders, academics, and U.S. lawmakers.
His itinerary includes stops in Dallas, Texas, and Washington, D.C. In Dallas, he is scheduled to address a large community event at the Toyota Music Factory, focusing on his vision for India's future and the role of the diaspora in shaping it. In Washington, D.C., his engagements encompass meetings with U.S. lawmakers, including members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and discussions with officials from the Biden administration. These interactions are expected to cover topics such as democratic values, economic cooperation, and global challenges.
The visit also includes academic engagements, notably a fireside chat at the University of Texas, where he will interact with students and faculty, discussing India's socio-political landscape and its implications for global affairs.
His U.S. tour comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's anticipated visit to the United Nations General Assembly later this month, highlighting the strategic importance of India-U.S. relations in the current geopolitical context.
