In a rare cross-border expression of solidarity, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his elder brother, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, voiced their condolences following the tragic Air India Flight AI 171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Shehbaz described the disaster as a "heartbreaking tragedy" and said: "We extend our condolences to the families of the victims grieving this immense loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected."
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif emphasised the deep human connection between the two nations, tweeting: "My heartfelt condolences to the families of the precious lives lost … This devastating loss transcends borders and reminds us of our shared humanity. My deepest sympathies to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India."
Their messages arrive amid a wave of grief from world leaders and citizens, underscoring a moment of shared sorrow that transcends historical tensions. Pakistani political figures like Bilawal Bhutto‑Zardari, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Deputy PM Ishaq Dar also expressed sympathy, reflecting a rare consensus of empathy in the wake of an international aviation disaster .
