In the heart of Andhra Pradesh, the Veerabhadra Temple in Lepakshi stands as a testament to India’s architectural brilliance. Built in the 16th century under the Vijayanagara Empire, the temple is renowned for its intricate sculptures, stunning frescoes, and sacred shrines. However, one feature has captivated visitors and experts for centuries—the gravity-defying hanging pillar.
A PILLAR THAT FLOATS?
Among the 70 elaborately carved stone pillars supporting the temple’s grand structure, one stands apart. Unlike the others, this pillar does not touch the ground, leaving a small gap underneath. Tourists and guides often demonstrate this mystery by passing a cloth or a piece of paper beneath it, proving that it is truly suspended.
Historians and engineers have tried to decode this astonishing architectural anomaly, but the secret behind its construction remains unknown. The temple, built entirely of granite, reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of the Vijayanagara artisans, but how they managed to create a seemingly weightless stone structure remains a puzzle.
A BRITISH ENGINEER'S FAILED ATTEMPT
During the British colonial era, an engineer, fascinated by this mystery, attempted to move the pillar to uncover its secret. However, his efforts failed, and it is believed that his interference slightly displaced the pillar from its original position.
AN ENDURING ENIGMA
Despite centuries of technological advancements, no one has been able to explain the hanging pillar’s engineering. The temple continues to draw curious travelers, architects, and historians eager to witness this unparalleled marvel of ancient India.
