Artificial nails including acrylics, press-ons, and gel extensions are a popular fashion choice, but they can pose serious risks if you have nail psoriasis. Dermatologists warn that such enhancements can increase the likelihood of nail separation from the nail bed, a common and painful issue in psoriasis sufferers.
Applying or removing these nails often involves buffing, cuticle trimming, or using harsh chemicals, all of which can trigger the Koebner phenomenon where minor injury prompts new psoriasis lesions. Cases of pseudopsoriatic nail changes psoriasis-like symptoms triggered solely by acrylic use have also been documented.
Instead of artificial enhancements, experts recommend safer alternatives: regular nail polish and gentle buffs are acceptable; the latter can help mask superficial nail pitting. But worst of all for psoriasis are acrylics and gel nails, which should be avoided.
