In 2025, the idea that online certifications could supplant college degrees is gaining momentum—yet the reality remains nuanced. Online degrees are now widely accepted when accredited: over 70% of hiring managers view them as comparable to traditional degrees, particularly from reputable institutions. In India, UGC-approved online degrees are even considered equivalent to on-campus qualifications and valid for exams like the UPSC.
At the same time, employers are increasingly prioritizing practical skills and credentials: nearly half surveyed business leaders value ChatGPT experience over a degree for entry-level roles. PwC’s 2025 AI Jobs Barometer also emphasizes that in AI-exposed roles, competence matters more than formal qualifications.
However, many non-degree certificates fail to translate into pay raises or career growth. Only one in eight leads to meaningful advancement, unless tied to in-demand fields like nursing or radiology. That said, combining a degree with targeted certification dramatically boosts employability - especially in tech roles like machine learning engineering.
Bottom line: Online and industry certifications can complement or, in niche cases, substitute for degrees—but they work best as part of a broader, skills-driven strategy rather than standalone credentials.
