Food addiction is a growing concern, where individuals struggle to control their consumption of highly palatable foods, such as those high in sugar, fat, salt, or artificial sweeteners.
These foods trigger the brain's pleasure centers, releasing dopamine and serotonin, the same chemicals affected by drugs or alcohol. Over time, the brain adjusts, leading to increased cravings and larger portions to achieve the same "feel-good" effect.
Those at risk for food addiction include people who cope with stress through food, those exposed to such foods from a young age, and individuals with a genetic predisposition to addiction.
Key signs include eating uncontrollably, shame or guilt after eating, and withdrawal symptoms like headaches and irritability.
Preventing food addiction involves avoiding excessive consumption of processed foods, eating a balanced diet, and recognizing early warning signs.
Overcoming it may require detoxification, behavior changes, and professional support.
