In the quiet village of Hapat Nar, approximately 20 kilometers from Pahalgam, grief enveloped the community as residents gathered to bid farewell to Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a local pony handler who lost his life during the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Adil, in his early thirties, was among the 26 victims of the assault that targeted tourists in the Baisaran Valley.
According to survivor accounts, Adil displayed remarkable courage by attempting to protect tourists during the attack. Reports suggest he tried to wrest a rifle from one of the assailants, an act that may have saved lives but ultimately led to his own death. While security officials have yet to confirm the exact circumstances, the narrative of his bravery has resonated deeply within the community.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attended Adil's funeral, joining thousands in mourning. "He tried to stop the attack. We've heard he was targeted after he tried to snatch a terrorist’s rifle," Abdullah stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to supporting Adil's family.
Adil's family, including his father Syed Haider Hussain Shah, mother Bibi Jaan, and his sisters, are in profound shock. A daily-wage earner, Adil was known for his dedication to his work, ferrying tourists to scenic spots like Baisaran for Rs 300 a day. He had been diligently saving for his sisters' weddings, embodying the role of a responsible and caring family member.
