A massive avalanche struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district near Mana village, trapping 57 construction workers under the snow. Rescue teams, including the ITBP and the army, are working relentlessly to locate and save those still missing.
So far, 16 individuals have been rescued, while 41 remain unaccounted for. The avalanche hit a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp, where workers were engaged in road construction. Relief operations face severe obstacles due to the blocked road leading to the site and the absence of mobile or radio connectivity, making coordination difficult.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari confirmed the number of those trapped, while police spokesperson Nilesh Bharne emphasized the scale of the disaster. Colonel Ankur Mahajan, commander of BRO, stated that the full extent of injuries among the rescued is still unclear. The road leading to Hanumanchatti remains impassable, further delaying rescue efforts.
SDRF commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi confirmed that a team has been sent from Jyotirmath, with additional high-altitude units in Gauchar and Sahastradhara on standby for air deployment if necessary.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep concern over the tragedy, ensuring that all necessary efforts are being made to rescue those trapped.
