India-Bangladesh’s “frank, candid, and constructive” talk reaffirm ties, prioritizing minority safety

In a recent briefing to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared insights from his December visit to Bangladesh, highlighting India’s commitment to the safety of minorities and strengthening bilateral relations.

Misri described his talks in Dhaka as "frank, candid, and constructive," focusing on the ongoing challenges surrounding the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. Amid rising concerns over attacks on Hindus, including temple desecration and violence, Misri confirmed that the Bangladeshi government had pledged to take action against those responsible. India has consistently urged its neighbour to ensure the safety and rights of its minority communities.

The visit also coincided with Bangladesh’s political shift, following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August and the formation of an interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Despite media speculation, Misri clarified that the interim government had no intentions of altering the existing agreements between India and Bangladesh, ensuring continuity in bilateral ties.

During the briefing, several Members of Parliament sought clarification on the political developments in Bangladesh, including Sheikh Hasina’s current status. Misri addressed these questions while reaffirming India’s desire for a stable, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh.

This high-level visit further reflects India’s ongoing commitment to fostering a peaceful neighbourhood and addressing regional concerns with respect and diplomatic dialogue. Misri's emphasis on minority protection and continued collaboration reinforces the enduring importance of India-Bangladesh relations in the context of the region’s evolving political landscape.
