Speaking at the Network 18 Green Bharat Summit in New Delhi, Gadkari discussed the remarkable growth of India's automotive sector. Since he took office, the industry's size has grown from ₹7 lakh crore to ₹22 lakh crore. “Today, the industry is valued at ₹22 lakh crore, surpassing Japan. We have become the third-largest auto industry globally. The USA leads with ₹78 lakh crore, and China, with ₹47 lakh crore, is expected to remain number one in the next five years. I am confident that electric vehicles will be a major contributor to the industry's growth,” Gadkari said.
He further highlighted India’s strengths, including a large labor force and abundant resources, as key factors enabling the country to lead in the automotive sector. Gadkari also emphasized the economic benefits of transitioning from fossil-fuel vehicles to EVs, which would not only drive exports and business but also create jobs in India.
The Indian automotive industry currently has a market size of ₹22 lakh crore, with China at the top with ₹47 lakh crore and the USA second at ₹78 lakh crore. Gadkari predicted that within the next two years, EV prices will be comparable to petrol and diesel vehicles.
The minister also proposed using surplus food grains in India for producing alternative biofuels. These biofuels, described as cost-effective, pollution-free, and indigenous, could play a significant role in reducing dependence on imports.
