The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has urged sanctions against India's Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) for alleged assassination plots targeting Sikh separatists, Reuters reported. In its annual report, the commission accused India of worsening religious freedom, claiming minorities face increasing attacks and discrimination.
It recommended designating India a “country of particular concern,” alongside Vietnam, for similar violations. Tensions between India and the US have escalated since 2023 over claims of India targeting Sikh separatists abroad, including a foiled plot against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. India denies involvement, viewing separatists as threats. The report also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for alleged hate rhetoric during elections.
While the US sees India as a key ally against China, analysts doubt the Trump administration will act on the non-binding recommendations. India dismisses such critiques as biased, highlighting its inclusive policies.
