Idlis- a beloved South Indian breakfast are supposed to be light, fluffy, and healthy. But what if your favorite dish is hiding something dangerous? In a shocking discovery, Karnataka's food safety authorities found 52 hotels using plastic sheets to prepare idlis, exposing customers to harmful chemicals linked to cancer.
The crackdown comes after reports suggested that some restaurants were lining steamers with plastic sheets instead of traditional banana leaves or cloth. When exposed to high heat, these plastic sheets release toxic substances that can contaminate the food. Over time, consuming such food could lead to serious health risks, including cancer.
Authorities swiftly acted against the offenders, issuing strict warnings and sealing some kitchens. Officials emphasized that food safety is non-negotiable and urged all eateries to switch to safe and traditional cooking methods. "Health comes first. People must be aware of what they are eating," said an official leading the operation.
This revelation has sparked outrage among food lovers, with many questioning how such unsafe practices continued unnoticed. Customers are now demanding stricter checks to ensure their meals are free from harmful chemicals.
As Karnataka tightens food safety regulations, one thing is clear, traditional cooking methods are not just about taste; they are about health. So, the next time you enjoy a plate of steaming idlis, make sure they are cooked the right way!
