Lessons NOT Learned: How India’s Railways Keep Ignoring Passenger Safety

A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station has once again highlighted the urgent need for better crowd management and access control at India's busiest transport hubs. The incident, which left multiple passengers injured, occurred due to overcrowding at entry and exit points, exposing critical lapses in station design and security measures.

Indian Railways officials have now acknowledged the lack of controlled access as a major factor contributing to the chaos. Unlike airports, where strict entry regulations exist, railway stations remain largely open, allowing unrestricted movement of passengers and vendors alike. This results in heavy congestion, particularly during peak hours, festival seasons, and unexpected train delays.

Experts suggest that implementing systematic access controls—such as designated entry points, regulated ticket checks, and improved infrastructure—could significantly reduce such risks. Additionally, real-time crowd monitoring, emergency response mechanisms, and awareness campaigns are being proposed as essential safety measures.

With millions depending on railway transport daily, the recent incident serves as a wake-up call for authorities to prioritize passenger safety. If urgent reforms are not undertaken, India's railway stations may continue to be vulnerable to such life-threatening disasters.
