In a significant political development, Maharashtra's Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Dhananjay Munde, tendered his resignation on March 4, 2025, following the arrest of his close aide, Walmik Karad, in connection with the murder of Beed district sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh. Deshmukh was abducted and killed in December 2024, and recent investigations have identified Karad as the alleged mastermind behind the crime.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the acceptance of Munde's resignation, stating that the decision was made after consultations with Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The resignation has been forwarded to the state governor for further action.
Opposition leaders have criticized the government for the delay in Munde's resignation and are demanding a thorough investigation into his possible involvement. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray emphasized the need for justice for Deshmukh's family, while MP Sanjay Raut called for Munde to be charged in connection with the murder.
This incident has heightened political tensions in Maharashtra, raising concerns about the nexus between politics and criminal activities in the state.
