The sacred waters of the Sangam in Prayagraj have become the center of controversy as a recent report suggested contamination during the ongoing Maha Kumbh.
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) allegedly found high levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the water, raising concerns about its safety for bathing. However, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has dismissed these claims as "propaganda" meant to malign the grand spiritual gathering.
Addressing the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, CM Yogi stated that all drainage outlets near the Sangam had been sealed, ensuring that only purified water was released. He asserted that regular monitoring by the UP Pollution Control Board confirmed that the water quality met safe standards.
"The BOD level near the Sangam is below 3, and dissolved oxygen is between 8-9, making it not just suitable for bathing but also for ‘Aachman’ (ritual sipping)," he declared.
Despite these assurances, the CPCB's findings, presented to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), raised alarms over untreated sewage allegedly entering the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.
Tests conducted on January 12 and 13 suggested the water was unfit for use, contradicting the state government's claims.
In response, Yogi Adityanath accused critics of attempting to tarnish the Maha Kumbh and Indian traditions. "Spreading fake news against Sanatana Dharma and the sacred rivers is playing with the faith of millions," he warned.
As the debate rages, millions of devotees continue to take their holy dip, placing their faith above scientific reports.
