The Joint Action Committee (JAC), led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, has passed a resolution urging the Union Government to extend the freeze on parliamentary delimitation for another 25 years. The committee, which includes representatives from multiple states, opposed any non-transparent delimitation exercise that fails to involve key stakeholders.
The resolution emphasized that states implementing effective population control measures should not be penalized with reduced parliamentary representation. It pointed out that the original freeze on parliamentary constituencies (based on the 1971 Census) was meant to incentivize population stabilization and should remain in place until national population goals are achieved.
The JAC insisted that any delimitation must be conducted through a fair and inclusive process, ensuring participation from state governments, political parties, and other relevant stakeholders. A Core Committee of Members of Parliament will now coordinate strategies in Parliament to challenge any delimitation proposal that does not align with these principles.
