Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to the White House for his first meeting with Donald Trump in the latter's second term, marking a new chapter in US-India relations. The meeting, marked by camaraderie and mutual admiration, highlighted trade, security, and strategic partnerships.
The two leaders announced a framework to address US-India trade disparities, with Modi pledging reductions in India's tariffs and a target to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Modi's adoption of Trump's “Make America Great Again” slogan into “Make India Great Again” underscored their shared nationalist agendas, emphasizing prosperity through collaboration.
The meeting also showcased India's concessions to blunt Trump's criticism of trade imbalances. Modi pledged to increase imports of US energy products and hinted at participation in an infrastructure project connecting allies globally, countering China's Belt and Road Initiative. Trump reciprocated by announcing a robust partnership in energy, with the US aiming to become India’s top oil and gas supplier.
Security took center stage with both leaders pledging to fight terrorism. Trump approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, convicted of supporting the 2008 Mumbai attacks, a move Modi praised. Modi emphasized cross-border terrorism and vowed stronger US-India cooperation on global security.
Despite the optimism, both leaders face accusations of undermining democratic values in their respective nations. Nevertheless, the meeting reflected a strategic alignment to counter shared challenges, including China's growing influence.
