Indian Railways has rolled out a strict ‘After 10 pm Rule’ to make night journeys calmer. Under the latest guidelines, passengers must maintain silence in coaches once the clock hits ten. Activities like watching reels without headphones, loud conversations, blaring music, or leaving bright lights on are officially discouraged.
The aim is simple—ensure every traveller gets rest during overnight trips. Railways clarified that any action disturbing co-passengers violates the rule. Section 145 of the Railway Act, 1989 backs the move: offenders can face a warning, a fine between ₹500 and ₹1,000, or stricter action if unruly behaviour continues.
Guidelines also insist that all lights except the night lamp remain switched off, while phone calls should be brief and low-toned. Listening to songs or videos on speaker is treated as a direct breach of peace.
Officials say the rule is about courtesy and safety, not punishment. However, with rising late-night screen habits, this clampdown is a wake-up call: enjoy entertainment, but not at someone else’s cost.
