Rain, thunderstorm expected in Delhi today, orange alert issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread alerts for thunderstorms and gusty winds across northwest India as the southwest monsoon advances over much of the country. An upper air cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh is triggering the weather activity.

Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir are set to witness thunderstorms with winds up to 50 kmph until June 2. Meanwhile, Kerala faces red and orange rainfall alerts, with schools shut across several districts including Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Night travel bans have also been imposed in high-range areas of Idukki.

Delhi recorded light showers and is under an orange alert for May 30, while Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh will see thunderstorms and rain through May 31. In Mumbai, an early monsoon has led to a 20-30% rise in respiratory and mosquito-borne illnesses, causing concern in major hospitals.
