In a swift political move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday removed state forest minister K Ponmudy from his position as DMK deputy general secretary. The decision followed a public outcry over Ponmudy's alleged distasteful joke involving women from Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions, sparking sharp criticism across political lines.
A viral video showed Ponmudy making inappropriate remarks in a controversial context involving a sex worker. DMK MP Kanimozhi condemned his comments, calling them "unacceptable," even before Stalin took action. Meanwhile, the BJP demanded Ponmudy's removal from the cabinet and called for his arrest, accusing him of maligning the dignity of Tamil Nadu's women.
Stalin, in a brief statement, announced Ponmudy's removal without citing reasons. This isn't Ponmudy's first controversy. He previously made headlines for a jibe linking North Indians with street food vending.
The controversy continues to simmer as the state watches for the next move.
