On December 4, 1971, during the Indo-Pak war, Pakistan’s submarine PNS Ghazi sank off the coast of Visakhapatnam under mysterious circumstances. The vessel had been deployed with the mission of destroying India’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, then docked in the Bay of Bengal.
Indian naval records credit the sinking to depth charges dropped by INS Rajput, which detected suspicious underwater activity near Vizag. However, Pakistani accounts dispute this, suggesting Ghazi may have been destroyed by its own mines while laying explosives, or that an internal technical failure caused the explosion .
The wreck of Ghazi still lies in the Bay of Bengal, serving as a war grave. More than five decades later, historians and naval experts remain divided, with both India and Pakistan claiming different versions of events.
The mystery of Ghazi endures - an unresolved episode of naval warfare that continues to intrigue scholars and strategists alike.
