US President Donald Trump has reignited trade tensions by demanding that Apple manufacture iPhones within the United States or pay a hefty 25 percent tariff. In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he informed Apple CEO Tim Cook that iPhones sold in the US must be made domestically, not in India or any other foreign location.
The announcement immediately shook markets, with Apple shares plunging 4 percent and Nasdaq futures slipping. This comes as Apple has significantly ramped up production in India, manufacturing smartphones worth 22 billion dollars in the last fiscal year.
Trump reiterated his stand, saying he had a “little problem” with Cook and does not want Apple “building in India.” Despite Apple’s previous pledge to invest over 500 billion dollars in the US, Trump is now pushing for full-scale local production, potentially reshaping the tech giant’s global supply chain.
