In a rare show of global unanimity, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) came down hard on Pakistan during a closed-door consultation over last month's horrific Pahalgam terror attack. The attack, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator, has been linked to Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
UNSC members grilled Islamabad over its role, dismissing Pakistan's attempts to label the attack as a “false flag” operation by India. Members further flagged Pakistan's escalatory nuclear rhetoric and recent missile tests as destabilizing moves. The UNSC emphasized the need for accountability and condemned the targeting of civilians based on religion.
Pakistan's request to internationalize the issue crumbled as members urged bilateral resolution. India, in response to the massacre, suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and revoked visas for Pakistani nationals. UN chief António Guterres reiterated that military solutions are futile and called for maximum restraint and dialogue between both nations.
