Dr. Gulhima Arora, senior consultant dermatologist at Mehektagul Dermaclinic in New Delhi, emphasizes that while retinol offers benefits like reducing acne, fine lines, and wrinkles, it can increase skin sensitivity, leading to redness, dryness, or peeling, especially when introduced abruptly or applied on damp skin.
To mitigate potential irritation, Dr. Arora recommends:
Gradual Introduction: Begin with low-potency formulations, applying retinol three to four times a week on dry skin, and incrementally increase frequency as tolerated.
Nighttime Application: Apply retinol at night to minimize light exposure, as sunlight can exacerbate sensitivity and reduce efficacy.
Sun Protection: Consistently use broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, reapplying as necessary, to shield the skin from harmful UV rays.
Support Skin Barrier: Maintain skin health by consuming a diet rich in omega fatty acids and using gentle cleansers to preserve natural oils.
Protective Measures: When outdoors, wear sun-protective clothing, hats, and carry umbrellas to further guard against UV exposure.
By adhering to these guidelines, individuals can continue to benefit from retinol's anti-aging properties without compromising skin health during the summer months.
