On March 11, 2025, Pakistan was shaken by the hijacking of the Jaffar Express in Balochistan's Bolan district. Claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), the attack intensified regional tensions, leading to a deadly military operation and renewed accusations of foreign interference.
Who is the BLA?
The BLA is an ethnonationalist militant group seeking an independent Baloch state. It claims Islamabad exploits Balochistan's vast resources while its people suffer from underdevelopment and military crackdowns.
The Attack
The Jaffar Express, carrying 450 passengers, was derailed by explosives in a mountain tunnel. BLA militants seized hostages, allegedly separating military personnel. A 36-hour military operation led to 354 rescues but at least 25 deaths. The BLA claimed it executed 214 hostages, a claim Pakistan denies.
Why a Civilian Target?
The BLA typically attacks security forces and CPEC projects. Targeting a passenger train marks a shift in tactics, aimed at spreading fear. Pakistan accused India and Afghanistan of supporting the insurgents, which both denied.
What's Next?
Pakistan's military response may escalate tensions, fueling further radicalization. The Balochistan conflict remains unresolved, raising a crucial question- will peace come through war or dialogue?
