It sounds impossible, doesn't it? How could lying still in deep sleep burn more calories than sitting awake, watching your favorite show? But the truth is stranger than fiction your body works harder in sleep than you think.
While you're lost in dreams, your body is anything but idle. Your brain remains active, cells repair themselves, and your metabolism keeps running, all requiring energy.
On average, a person burns 50–70 calories per hour while sleeping, depending on weight and metabolism. Compare that to watching TV where your body slows down into a near-resting state, burning as little as 20–30 calories per hour.
Why the difference? Sleep is when your body performs essential functions regulating hormones, rebuilding muscle, and maintaining body temperature all of which demand energy.
Your brain alone uses about 20% of your body’s total energy! Meanwhile, TV-watching lulls your body into a passive state, reducing movement, brain activity, and energy expenditure.
Too much TV not only burns fewer calories but can slow down your metabolism over time, making weight gain easier. So while binge-watching may feel effortless, it might actually be working against you.
