Starting April 1, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will delete UPI IDs associated with inactive mobile numbers to prevent potential fraud. This move will impact users on payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
NPCI's decision is aimed at curbing security risks, as inactive numbers may be reassigned to new users, making them vulnerable to unauthorized transactions. Banks and payment service providers will regularly identify and remove UPI IDs linked to deactivated or unused numbers.
Users who have changed their mobile numbers but haven't updated them with their banks will also lose UPI access. Banks will notify affected users before removing their UPI IDs. However, those who update their numbers before April 1 will retain access to digital payments.
With fraudsters constantly seeking loopholes, NPCI's crackdown is a proactive step in securing the UPI ecosystem.
