Australian cricketer Steve Smith, aged 35, has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. This decision follows Australia's semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy, where Smith top-scored with 73 runs.
Smith's ODI career spanned 170 matches, during which he amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. He was instrumental in Australia's World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023.
Expressing his sentiments, Smith remarked, "It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey." He further added that stepping aside now provides an opportunity for emerging players to prepare for the 2027 World Cup.
While retiring from ODIs, Smith remains committed to Test cricket and Twenty20 Internationals. He looks forward to upcoming fixtures, including the World Test Championship Final and series against the West Indies and England.
Cricket Australia's Chairman of Selectors, George Bailey, lauded Smith's contributions, stating, "His record as a batter across 167 games is exemplary and to leave the format as a two-time World Cup winner cements his legacy as one of the great Australian ODI players."
Smith's departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Australian cricket, with fans and teammates alike celebrating his illustrious ODI career.
