Born on April 5, 1908, in Chandwa, Bihar, Babu Jagjivan Ram was a prominent Indian politician and a crusader for social justice. Popularly known as "Babuji," he devoted his life to fighting caste discrimination and uplifting the marginalized.
As a freedom fighter, he joined the Indian National Congress and actively participated in the Quit India Movement. He later became one of the longest-serving union ministers, holding key portfolios like Defence, Labour, and Agriculture.
Lesser known is his instrumental role in shaping India's Green Revolution, ensuring food security during the 1960s. As Defence Minister during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, he led India to a historic victory and the creation of Bangladesh.
Despite his Dalit background, he broke social barriers, becoming the Deputy Prime Minister in 1977 under the Janata Party government.
He was a firm believer in education and social reform, founding several organizations for Dalit rights. A brilliant orator and visionary, Babu Jagjivan Ram remains an enduring symbol of empowerment, equality, and service to the nation.
Today, on his birth anniversary, India remembers his legacy with pride and gratitude.
