Delhi shivered at 7°C on Wednesday morning as a thick fog descended over the city, intensifying cold wave conditions across northern India. By 5:30 AM, visibility dropped drastically, impacting daily life. At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, visibility plummeted to 100 meters, delaying flights not equipped with CAT III technology, which assists landings in low visibility. Passengers were advised to check updates with their respective airlines to avoid inconvenience.
Train services also suffered, with 26 trains delayed due to foggy conditions in Delhi and adjoining states. The air quality in the city worsened further, falling into the 'very poor' category, with an AQI of 332 recorded by 8:00 AM. Commuters experienced reduced visibility on roads, compounding travel disruptions.
The weather department issued a yellow alert for moderate to dense fog in Delhi until Wednesday, with light rain predicted in the evening. A western disturbance is expected to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms to Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh through Thursday, potentially adding to the ongoing travel woes.
Similar foggy conditions affected several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, as the winter chill gripped northern India. With minimal visibility and worsening pollution levels, residents are bracing for further weather-related challenges this week.
