The Madras High Court on Friday granted interim anticipatory bail to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who is facing legal trouble over his parody of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Kamra, who moved to Tamil Nadu from Mumbai in 2021, argued that he feared arrest by Mumbai Police. His parody song, performed at Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai's Khar, sparked outrage among Shiv Sena supporters, leading to vandalism at the venue. Following a complaint by Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel, Kamra was booked for allegedly defamatory remarks.
The Mumbai Police has summoned Kamra for questioning on March 31. Meanwhile, 12 Shiv Sena members, including leader Rahool Kanal, were arrested for ransacking the comedy venue. As the controversy grows, Kamra remains vocal, criticizing the media's role in the political landscape.
Will this case set a new precedent for comedy and free speech in India?
