A private school in Coimbatore's Senguttaipalayam village is facing severe backlash after a 13-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly forced to write her exam on a staircase during her first period. The incident, captured on video by the girl's mother, has gone viral, sparking outrage on social media and drawing attention to caste and menstrual discrimination in schools.
The headmistress has been suspended pending investigation. Authorities say the girl, from the Arunthathiyar community, was not allowed to sit in class after her teacher informed the principal she had attained puberty.
However, the school claims the mother requested separate arrangements, though she was later shocked to see her daughter without a desk or privacy. A preliminary probe by the school education department and police is underway, and a show-cause notice has been issued to the institution.
The case has reignited the debate on menstrual taboos and caste-based discrimination in education.
