In a densely populated part of East Delhi, the discovery of dismembered human remains at the old Ram Lila maidan shocked the city. The crime, initially a blind case, unraveled into a chilling narrative of domestic discord, deception, and premeditated murder.
The body parts, discovered in May 2022, were identified as those of Anjan Das, a 45-year-old resident of Trilokpuri. Forensic analysis revealed the remains had been frozen before being disposed of. With limited leads, the police relied on CCTV footage and mobile data to trace the suspects: Poonam Devi, Das's wife, and her son Deepak.
Poonam confessed to the crime, detailing how Das's behavior and concealed past had pushed her and her son to plan the murder. Das was allegedly abusive, an alcoholic, and had made advances toward Poonam's daughter and daughter-in-law. Adding to the tension was his secret first marriage and eight children in Bihar, which Poonam discovered after their marriage in 2017.
On May 30, Poonam and Deepak drugged Das, stabbed him to death, and dismembered his body. The parts were stored in plastic sacks and dumped in the vicinity, including the old maidan. However, their plan unraveled due to inconsistencies, including their switched-off mobile phones post-crime, which raised suspicions.
While Poonam and Deepak await trial in Tihar Jail, their family has been left shattered. The case is a grim reminder of how strained relationships and hidden truths can spiral into unimaginable tragedy.
