Kidney disease is rising across all age groups in India, yet many people remain unaware of the risks and early warning signs. Dr. Bharat Shah, Director of Renal Science at Gleneagles Hospital, highlights how dangerous misinformation can delay diagnosis and worsen outcomes.
A major concern is the overuse of painkillers, which silently damages kidneys over time. Many also believe that kidney disease is rare or that feeling well means their kidneys are healthy. However, CKD often progresses without symptoms, making regular screening vital through tests like urine routine, serum creatinine, and ultrasound.
Contrary to common belief, dialysis is not always necessary. With early detection and proper management, the progression of kidney disease can often be slowed or even halted. Kidney transplants aren’t limited to the young, and donors don’t always need to be close relatives-emotionally related individuals can also donate with government approval.
It’s also a myth that transplants are extremely risky. With modern techniques and post-operative care, they are now safer and more successful than ever. Patients generally regain a near-normal quality of life after recovery.
Dr. Shah emphasizes that spreading awareness and breaking these nine common myths is essential to protect kidney health and encourage early action-before irreversible damage occurs.
