Pakistan's military is facing a severe artillery ammunition shortage, threatening its operational readiness amid rising regional tensions. According to ANI, the Pakistan Army can sustain high-intensity combat for only 96 hours, a crisis fueled by extensive exports of 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine. These arms transfers, driven by lucrative contracts, have critically depleted strategic reserves, leaving key systems like the M109 howitzers and BM-21 rockets understocked. Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) has struggled to replenish supplies due to outdated infrastructure and low production capacity.
The dire situation dominated a recent Special Corps Commanders Conference, reflecting mounting panic within military leadership. Compounding the crisis is Pakistan's deepening economic turmoil, which has forced suspension of exercises and war games. Although new ammunition depots are being built near the Indian border, analysts argue they are ineffective without adequate stockpiles.
This vulnerability surfaces as India escalates diplomatic and economic measures following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
