Every year on 26th January, India comes alive with vibrant parades, patriotic songs, and celebrations. But have you ever wondered why this particular date holds such importance?
The journey of 26th January began two decades before India became a republic. Back in 1930, the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (complete independence) as India's ultimate goal. On 26th January 1930, the first 'Independence Day' was celebrated, symbolizing India's determination to break free from British rule.
Fast forward to 1947, when India finally gained independence. Yet, the country didn't have its own set of laws. Until 1950, India followed the Government of India Act, 1935, a relic of British rule. So, the drafting of the Indian Constitution became a top priority. The Constituent Assembly, led by visionaries like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, worked tirelessly to create a framework of justice, equality, and freedom.
On 26th January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect, replacing colonial laws and making India a republic. The date was deliberately chosen to honor the Purna Swaraj declaration, tying the present to the freedom struggle.
The highlight of Republic Day is the grand parade held at Rajpath in New Delhi. The celebration showcases India's military might, cultural heritage, and technological achievements. The parade features marching contingents, colourful tableaux from different states, and breathtaking air displays by the Indian Air Force.
Every year, a chief guest from a foreign nation graces the occasion, symbolizing India's diplomatic relations. This year the guest is going to be President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr Prabowo Subianto.
