Shoaib Akhtar, the legendary Pakistani fast bowler, expressed his disappointment after the Champions Trophy presentation event in Dubai on Sunday, where no Pakistani representative was present despite Pakistan being the official host of the tournament.
India triumphed over New Zealand in a thrilling final, and the trophy was presented to India's captain Rohit Sharma by ICC Chairman Jay Shah. The champions' white blazers were handed over by BCCI President Roger Binny, with other notable figures like Aaron Finch and Devajit Saikia on stage. But what stood out for Akhtar was the glaring absence of anyone from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
In a video posted on X, Akhtar shared his frustration: "It was beyond me. Pakistan hosted the tournament, yet there was no one from our board at the presentation ceremony. It's disheartening to see that." He stressed the significance of Pakistan's role as the host, yet no representative was present for such a monumental moment.
The surprise absence of PCB head Mohsin Naqvi only added to the disappointment. While the hybrid model was designed after India refused to play in Pakistan, it was expected that Pakistan would have a more visible presence, especially after the event marked the return of a major ICC tournament to Pakistan after 29 years.
However, Pakistan's team only managed to play one match at home before being knocked out of the tournament in Dubai.
