In the heart of Tamil Nadu's Chettinad region lies Athangudi, a village renowned for its vibrant and eco-friendly tiles that encapsulate a rich 200-year-old heritage.
These handcrafted tiles, known as Athangudi tiles, are celebrated for their intricate designs, glossy finish, and sustainable production methods.
The origin of Athangudi tiles dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the affluent Chettiar community, influenced by their extensive trade networks, imported tiles from countries like England, Germany, and Italy to adorn their palatial homes.
Over time, local artisans began crafting their own tiles, drawing inspiration from these imported designs while infusing them with indigenous aesthetics and materials.
This initiative not only reduced dependence on foreign imports but also fostered a unique art form that has been preserved through generations.
The production of Athangudi tiles is a meticulous process that emphasizes sustainability. Artisans use locally sourced materials, including a distinctive type of river sand known as 'vaariman,' cement, and natural pigments.
The process begins with placing an iron frame on a glass surface, into which colored patterns are poured to create the desired design. A mixture of sand and dry mortar is then spread over the colors, followed by a layer of wet mortar.
The tiles are left to set, cured in water for several days, and finally dried under the sun. This method requires no firing or electricity, making it environmentally friendly.
Each tile reflects the cultural heritage of the region, showcasing patterns ranging from floral motifs to geometric designs in rich hues like deep reds, blues, greens, and mustard yellows. The entire village of Athangudi, with a population of less than 2,000, is involved in this craft, ensuring that the tradition thrives and adapts to contemporary demands.
Today, Athangudi tiles are sought after globally, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their durability and eco-friendly attributes. They serve as a testament to how traditional craftsmanship can offer sustainable solutions in modern times, preserving cultural legacies while meeting present-day needs.
