The BYD Yangwang U9 supercar made waves at CES 2025 with its innovative "jumping suspension" feature, which allows it to leap over obstacles like potholes. A viral demonstration of the car jumping six meters over a pothole had social media users, particularly in India, comparing it to a “flying car” made for the country’s rough roads. This sparked a wave of humorous comments, with many imagining the car constantly airborne to avoid potholes.
The feature, designed to enhance suspension performance and ensure a smoother ride by adjusting the car's height and absorbing shocks, had a significant impact in the online world. The concept of “flying cars” has long captured the imagination, and with the Yangwang U9’s playful demonstration, it seemed that this dream could be closer to reality than ever before.
While the Yangwang U9 was the highlight for many, CES 2025 also saw the introduction of other futuristic vehicles, such as the Xpeng Aero HT’s “Land Aircraft Carrier.” This vehicle, a fusion of a minivan and an eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft), offers the possibility of flying over traffic, adding another exciting glimpse into the future of transport.
Although these flying vehicles remain in their developmental stages, they are already making waves with preorders exceeding 3,000, particularly in China. With prices under $300,000, these advanced machines promise a future of travel that could make both high-end journeys and emergency rescues more efficient.
