According to the Financial Times, the colossal error occurred last April when two bank employees failed to catch the mistake, allowing it to be processed. The jaw-dropping miscalculation sat unnoticed until a third employee spotted it an hour and a half later. Fortunately, Citi reversed the transaction within hours, ensuring no rogue trillionaires emerged overnight.

No actual money left the bank, but the incident was serious enough to be reported to federal regulators. Citi emphasized that their internal checks quickly flagged the issue and that safeguards were in place to prevent any funds from leaving.

While this may be the bank's most outrageous miscalculation in recent memory, it wasn't their only one, Citi recorded ten "near misses" involving $1 billion or more in 2024, though that was an improvement from 13 the year before.
