Did you know that cricketers sometimes have to give up 50% of their match fees? The reason? Slow over rate, one of cricket's biggest problems that still has no perfect solution.
According to ICC rules, a bowling team must finish their overs within a fixed time. In Test cricket, they must bowl 15 overs per hour. In ODIs, the innings must be completed in 3.5 hours, and in T20s, in 1.5 hours.
If a team fails to meet this requirement, they are fined 5% of their match fee for each slow over, up to a maximum of 50%.
It's not just money at stake! In World Test Championship, teams even lose points. Australia once missed out on a final spot because their points percentage dropped from 70% to 69.2%, allowing New Zealand to qualify instead!
The ICC has tried penalties like suspending captains, reducing fielders outside the 30-yard circle, and cutting overs, but nothing has fully worked. What do you think should be done to fix this problem? Share your thoughts!
