Pakistani security forces successfully rescued 104 hostages from a hijacked train in Balochistan on March 11, 2025. The dramatic rescue mission was carried out under intense pressure as militants continued to hold more than 100 passengers captive. The operation faced many challenges, including difficult terrain and the risk of harming innocent people.
The Jaffar Express, carrying about 500 passengers from Quetta to Peshawar, was attacked by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group fighting for Balochistan's independence. The militants derailed the train by blowing up a railway track and then stormed it, taking control.
The BLA claimed that Pakistani military personnel and intelligence officers were among the hostages. They issued a 48-hour deadline, demanding the release of Baloch political prisoners and missing persons. They also threatened to kill the hostages if their conditions were not met.
Security personnel on board resisted, leading to a deadly gunfight. At least 10 people, including nine security officers and the train driver, lost their lives. The militants then took over 200 passengers hostage, using them as human shields.
The Pakistani government has condemned the attack as an act of terrorism. Hospitals in the region are on high alert to treat potential casualties.
The rescue operation is still ongoing, with security forces working to free the remaining hostages and restore peace. The situation remains tense as the BLA refuses to back down.
