Skype is retiring in May 2025 as Microsoft shifts its focus to Teams (free), a more advanced and integrated collaboration hub. The decision comes as part of Microsoft's effort to modernize communication tools and streamline its free consumer offerings.
For years, Skype has connected people worldwide through instant messaging, voice calls, and video conferencing. However, with the growing demand for more dynamic and collaborative communication tools, Microsoft Teams has emerged as a superior alternative.
It offers many of Skype's core features, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing, while introducing enhanced capabilities such as calendar management, meeting hosting, and community building.
During the transition period, Skype users will have two primary options. They can seamlessly move to Teams using their Skype credentials, ensuring all their contacts and chats remain intact.
Alternatively, those who choose not to migrate can export their Skype data, including messages and call history. Importantly, Teams users and Skype users will still be able to communicate with each other during the transition.
As part of this change, Microsoft will discontinue new subscriptions for Skype's paid features, though existing users can continue using their credits until their renewal period ends.
After May 5, 2025, remaining paid users will still have access to the Skype Dial Pad via the web portal and Teams.
