The Lok Sabha witnessed a fiery debate as the Waqf Amendment Bill was tabled, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah accusing the opposition of spreading "fear-mongering" for political gains. Shah asserted that the bill does not interfere with Muslim religious matters and clarified that non-Muslims will not be involved in religious activities but only in the administration of waqf properties.
The bill, introduced by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, aims to rectify the legal framework established by the UPA government, which allegedly gave waqf laws precedence over other statutes. The BJP, JD(U), and TDP have issued whips to ensure their members' presence, boosting the bill's chances of passage.
With 240 BJP MPs and key allies' support, the NDA seems poised for victory. However, opposition voices continue to challenge its intent. Will the government push through the changes unscathed, or will the resistance prove formidable?
