Lipedema is a health condition where fat builds up in the legs, thighs, and sometimes arms. This makes the affected areas look swollen and feel painful.
It mostly happens to women and is often confused with regular weight gain. However, lipedema fat does not go away with diet or exercise, making it hard to treat. Many Indian women do not know about this condition, which leads to late diagnosis and more problems.
Indian women may have a higher risk of lipedema because of genetics. If a mother or grandmother had it, future generations may develop it too.
Hormonal changes, like during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, can trigger or worsen lipedema. A lack of physical activity and diets high in carbs and unhealthy fats can also make the condition worse.
Since many Indian women wear loose clothes, early symptoms can go unnoticed. Plus, social stigma around weight gain often stops them from seeking medical help.
To manage lipedema, early diagnosis is important. Exercise, gentle massages, and compression stockings can help reduce swelling and pain. Eating healthy foods that reduce inflammation may also help.
In severe cases, medical treatments like liposuction might be needed. However, the most important thing is awareness. Lipedema is not just about weight; it is a medical problem. Indian women should be informed about it so they can seek proper treatment and live a healthier, more comfortable life.
