Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the test drive of Mahindra's cutting-edge electric SUVs, the BE 6 and XEV 9, at the Secretariat in Chennai on January 13. This event marks a significant leap for Tamil Nadu's burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industry, with both models locally designed and developed.

Originally unveiled in November at Chengalpattu and Cheyyar, the BE 6 and XEV 9 showcase advanced technology such as automated steering, auto-braking, lane-changing capabilities, and parking assistance. According to Mahindra's Technology and Development President Veluchamy, the vehicles are equipped with 12 ultrasonic sensors, six cameras, and five radars, ensuring enhanced safety and seamless driving experiences.

Powered by a 79 kWh battery pack, these SUVs offer an impressive range of 500 km per charge. Additionally, the fast-charging capability allows the battery to go from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes, making them highly convenient for long trips. Advanced features like a virtual auto-parking system, heads-up display, and turn-by-turn navigation further enhance their appeal.

State Industries Minister TRB Raja emphasized the importance of local manufacturing, noting that Chief Minister Stalin was particularly pleased to learn that most components were produced within Tamil Nadu. Veluchamy also highlighted a driver-monitoring system that detects distractions and adjusts steering to ensure safety.

Priced at Rs 26.9 lakh and Rs 30.5 lakh (ex-showroom), the BE 6 and XEV 9 will be available for test drives starting January 14. “These SUVs are poised to set new benchmarks in the global EV market,” said Veluchamy.
