"If there’s no caste, why the outrage?" – Kashyap slams backlash on Phule film

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has openly criticized the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the backlash from certain Brahmin groups concerning the upcoming biopic on social reformer Jyotirao Phule. Kashyap questioned the opposition to the film, stating, "If there's no caste, why are you offended?"

The controversy centers around the casting of Brahmin actors in the roles of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, leading to accusations of misrepresentation and whitewashing of caste oppression. Critics argue that such casting choices undermine the authenticity of the narrative and dilute the historical struggles against caste-based discrimination.

Kashyap's remarks highlight ongoing tensions within Indian cinema regarding representation and the portrayal of marginalized communities. He has previously been vocal about the need for systemic changes within the CBFC, emphasizing that mere personnel changes are insufficient without a comprehensive overhaul of the institution's approach to censorship and certification.

The film industry has long grappled with issues of caste representation, with many pointing out the dominance of upper-caste narratives and the marginalization of Dalit voices. The current debate over the Phule biopic underscores the need for more inclusive storytelling that accurately reflects India's diverse social fabric.
